FHC fire hose cabinet is what the abbreviation FHC stands for: a fire hose cabinet, the term used on drawings, bills of quantity and tender documents to mark a wall enclosure holding a landing valve, hose and nozzle. If a drawing shows "FHC" against a wall position, it is asking for a fire hose cabinet at that point.
The abbreviation causes real confusion in international projects, because the same product is called different things in different markets, and neighbouring abbreviations mean different equipment. This guide sorts them out.

What an FHC Contains
At minimum a landing valve and a hose with a nozzle. Beyond that it varies by project:
- Hose type — a folded hose on a rack, or a reel on a swing arm
- Extinguisher bay — many projects put one or two portable extinguishers in the same enclosure, in a separate compartment
- Door — solid steel, or glazed so the equipment is visible
- Mounting — recessed into the wall, semi-recessed, surface-mounted, or freestanding on a plinth
So "FHC" on a drawing tells you the function, not the specification. The schedule or specification alongside it carries the actual requirement.
Abbreviations That Get Mixed Up

The most frequent mix-up is FHC and FHR. A schedule that says FHR is specifying the reel; whether it needs an enclosure is a separate line. Ordering cabinets against an FHR count, without checking, is how projects end up with the wrong quantity.
The Same Product, Different Names
International projects rarely use one vocabulary. The same wall cabinet is commonly called:
- Fire hose cabinet / FHC — the general international usage

- Box hydrant — the standard Indonesian term, with the word order reversed from the English form
- Fire hydrant cabinet / hydrant box — used where the emphasis is on the hydrant valve
This is not pedantry. When a buyer sends an enquiry using their local term and the supplier quotes a different product, the mismatch usually surfaces only at delivery. Send a drawing or a photo with the first enquiry and the naming problem disappears.
Reading an FHC Line on a BOQ
Look for four things beyond the abbreviation itself: the size or type reference, mounting style, material and finish, and whether the internal equipment is included in that line or supplied separately. Why the Abbreviation Persists
Drawings are crowded. An architect marking twenty cabinet positions across a floor plate has no room for the full term at each one, so the abbreviation earns its place. The problem is that abbreviations travel between documents while their definitions stay behind — the schedule that defined FHC on sheet one is not the sheet the procurement team is reading three months later.
That is also why the same abbreviation can differ between consultants. One practice may use FHC for the enclosure only; another may use it for the complete assembly including valve and hose. Neither is wrong, but they produce different quotations from the same supplier. When in doubt, ask which convention the drawing set uses before pricing anything.
Practical Advice for Buyers
Treat FHC as a category label, not a product code. Before requesting a quotation, confirm four things: the internal equipment list, the mounting style, the material and finish, and the dimensions or the drawing reference. Those four turn an abbreviation into something a factory can build.
It is also worth checking the quantity against the right abbreviation. Counting FHC positions on a plan gives the number of enclosures; counting FHR positions gives the number of reels, which may be housed differently or not housed at all. On a large project the two counts rarely match, and reconciling them before the order is far cheaper than discovering the gap at delivery. A supplier who quotes on the abbreviation alone is guessing — and on a project of any size, a guess in the enclosure specification is discovered on site, when the wall opening is already cut.
