What the Standards Actually Cover

BS 9990 is the code of practice for dry and wet fire mains — it governs the installation, not the box. The cabinet itself sits under BS 5041, which specifies inlet breechings in Part 3 and the boxes for dry riser inlets in Part 5. We build cabinets to those dimensions and finishes. We do not hold LPCB or Kitemark certification and never claim it.

BS 9990

The installation

Design, installation, testing and maintenance of dry and wet fire mains. Sets where inlets and outlets go, and the signage on them. Compliance belongs to the installer and the system, not to a single component.

BS 5041

The parts

Part 1 covers landing valves, Part 3 inlet breechings, Part 5 the boxes for dry riser inlets. Our cabinets are made to the Part 5 box dimensions so a standard breeching drops straight in.

Certification

Said plainly

LPCB and Kitemark certification is normally held by the valve or the breeching, not by the enclosure, and it is voluntary rather than a legal requirement. We supply material certificates, ISO 9001 records and third-party EN 60529 enclosure test reports — and we do not claim approvals we do not hold.

Dry Riser Cabinet Sizes

The three sizes that cover most UK work, plus the wall apertures they need. All dimensions H × W × D in millimetres; every one can be built recessed or surface, in steel or stainless.

Inlet and Outlet — the Two Cabinets on Every Riser

Same build, two sizes and two signs. The inlet cabinet sits at street level where the brigade connects; the outlet cabinet sits on each floor over the landing valve. Both shown here in RAL 3002 red with a Georgian wired glass door, slam lock and concealed pivot hinges; a stainless piano hinge is supplied where a specification calls for one.

Wired glass door so the breeching is visible without opening, slam lock keyed alike, concealed pivot hinges, drain hole and drip lip for external positions. Supplied empty for your certified breeching, or fitted.

630 × 460 × 275 mm, aperture 640 × 470 × 285 mm. Houses the landing valve on each floor, usually in the stair lobby. Identical build to the inlet cabinet, slightly wider and squarer, and the same box serves a wet riser — only the sign changes, to DRY RISER OUTLET, WET RISER OUTLET or PRV.

Outlet cabinets are the same size for dry riser and wet riser systems because the landing valve is the same. Depths of 275–295 mm are for recessed boxes; a surface architrave and door is far shallower. Send the breeching or valve model and we confirm the internal clearance before quoting.

Supplied empty as an enclosure, or fitted with an inlet breeching or landing valve sourced to your specification. We manufacture the cabinet; certified valves and breechings come from the maker you nominate.

Inlet, outlet and what goes in each

  • Inlet cabinet — houses the 2-way or 4-way inlet breeching at street level, where the fire brigade connects. Glazed door so the breeching is visible, slam lock, drainage.
  • Outlet cabinet — houses the landing valve on each floor, usually in the stair lobby. Same box for dry riser and wet riser.
  • Wet riser variants — identical boxes, different lettering; pressure-reducing valve outlets are marked PRV.
  • Supplied empty or fitted — most UK installers buy the enclosure and fit their own certified breeching or valve. We can also source and fit.

Parts of a dry riser cabinet: body, door and frame, wired-glass panel, slam lock, concealed pivot hinges (piano hinge on request), drip lip, drain hole, fixing lugs, lettering. Replacement glass, locks and keys are supplied for our cabinets.

Recessed, surface or architrave

RecessedBody inside the wall, frame over the aperture. The aperture sizes above allow 5 mm each side; wall depth must clear the cabinet depth.
SurfaceFull body on the wall face, no aperture needed. Used on plant-room walls, car park cores and retrofit work.
Door and architrave onlyWhere a builder’s opening already exists, a door and architrave set covers it — no box required.
Installation heightInlet cabinets sit at fire-brigade working height as set by BS 9990 and the approving officer; outlet cabinets follow the stair-lobby detail on your drawings.

Give us the wall build-up and we cut the frame to your finished-wall thickness. For external inlets we add a gasket and drip lip as standard.

Dry Riser Cabinet — Buyer FAQ

What size is a dry riser inlet cabinet?

A 2-way inlet cabinet for a 100 mm riser is typically 595 × 395 × 295 mm, needing a 605 × 405 × 305 mm aperture. A 4-way inlet cabinet for a 150 mm riser is 595 × 595 × 295 mm. Both are made recessed or surface mounted, in steel or stainless.

What are dry riser outlet cabinet dimensions?

The standard outlet or landing valve cabinet is 630 × 460 × 275 mm with a 640 × 470 × 285 mm aperture. Wet riser outlet cabinets are the same size, because the landing valve is the same — only the lettering changes.

What is the difference between a dry riser cabinet and a wet riser cabinet?

The box is the same. A dry riser is empty until the fire brigade charges it through the inlet breeching; a wet riser is permanently charged and fed by a pump. Wet riser outlet cabinets often carry PRV lettering where the landing valve is pressure-reducing.

Do dry riser cabinets have to be LPCB approved?

No. BS 9990 governs the installation and is the operative benchmark; LPCB and Kitemark certification is voluntary and is normally held by the inlet breeching or landing valve rather than the enclosure. Some specifications ask for it anyway — if yours does, we will say plainly that our cabinets are not LPCB certified so you can decide.

What colour and glazing are standard in the UK?

RAL 3002 carmine red is the UK convention for fire main cabinets — not the RAL 3000 flame red used on general fire equipment elsewhere — with a 6 mm Georgian wired glass panel and a slam lock keyed alike. We build to that as standard and to any other combination you specify.

Do you supply the breeching inlet and landing valve as well?

We manufacture the cabinet. Most UK installers fit their own certified breeching or valve, so we ship the enclosure with the correct cut-outs. We can source and fit valves to your nominated make if you prefer a complete assembly.

Can you supply under our own brand for a wholesaler?

Yes — free OEM. Your lettering, logo, colour and packaging with no tooling fee. That is how most of our UK volume ships.

Do you make breeching inlet cabinets for markets outside the UK?

Yes — the same boxes go to the Gulf, Malaysia and Singapore under the name breeching inlet cabinet, in 2-way and 4-way sizes to BS 5041 practice. See our breeching inlet cabinet page.
